Kumarakom, an enchanting backwater destination in Kerala is a cluster of small islands on the Vembanad Lake which is part of Kuttanad region. Looking at the images of the picturesque paradise of forests, coconut groves, canals adorned with white lilies and houseboats, Kumarakom seemed an ideal getaway to me from my mundane routine and so I planned for a short tour to Kumarakom backwaters.
Reaching there, I could feel nature at its best; the scenic views were picture perfect and a well balanced tropical climate to enjoy the excursion. The first destination in the Backwaters is Pathiramanal, a beautiful island and home to a rare variety of migratory birds. It is only accessible by a boat and thus this green island is an ideal place during the Backwater cruise. Houseboats are the most enchanting way to explore the beautiful scenery around the region.
The Kumarakom Backwaters of Kerala is a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to Arabian Sea Coast. One must also go for Boating or cruising in Vembanad Lake and sightseeing which are truly exhilarating. It is one of the largest lakes in Kerala and a beguiling picnic spot to enjoy serenity and a calm evening. If you are an enthusiastic Bird lover then Kumarakom backwater is the paradise for you. It is a favorite haunt of the migratory birds.
You could spot Egrets, Darters, Herons, Cuckoo and migratory birds like Siberian stork that live here in flock and a fascination to watch. I took a boat trip round the islands which is probably the best way to watch the birds. Next on the itinerary is Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, located on the banks of Vembanad Lake. A boat cruise on the Lake along the sanctuary acquaints one with a variety of migratory and native birds like Kingfishers and Woodpeckers. One must also enjoy fishing in the succulent and bountiful freshwater and relish their taste along. With this my tour to Kumarakom backwaters came to an end. The trip apprised me with the charming Kumarakom attractions and an out of the world experience.
